Large genus of more than 700 species. Usually bulbous, more rarely rhizomatus plants, with oblong, cylindrical leaves and spherical inflorescences. Many of the species are edible, and most of them feature malodorous leaves.
They grow in full sun, in light, very well-drained, fertile soils. Moderate requirements in water during growth period. Do not water while they are in dormancy.
Plant bulbs in autumn at a depth equal to two or three times the size of the bulb, in rock gardens or flowerpots.
Propagated mainly by bulblets but also by seeds.
Short plant with large (20 cm / 8 inches wide), purple umbels, borne in summer.
