Genus of more than 50 species of rhizomatous or tuberous species, native to South America. They feature green, usually lanceolate leaves and flowers that resemble those of the legumes (pea family).
Plant rhizomes in early autumn, in sunny or partly shaded sites, at a depth of 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in free-draining soils.
Protect plants with a vegetal mulch (e.g straw) in areas with winter temperatures below 10 °C (50°F).
Plant in flowerpots and arrangements.
Propagated by division in autumn.

Salmon pink to vivid pink flowers, with a yellow band on the two upper petals, appear in spring.
