The name of the genus is derived from the Greek "astragalos" (ankle) referring to the seed form of some of the species. It contains more than 1600 species of shrubs and herbs.

Deciduous, creeping shrub with a spiny crown, glaucous foliage and white flowers in late spring and early summer. Does best in full sun and cold climates and in moist, fertile soils. Propagatedd by cuttings.
