The genus name is derived from Greek "calycas" for calix and "anthos" for flower. It contains 2-4 species of deciduous shrubs. Grown for their aromatic flowers.

They grow in moist but well-drained, humus-rich, fertile soils, in full sun and partial shade.
Propagated by seeds after cold-moist stratification.
Prune hard in late winter to stimulate a richer flowering in summer.
No disease problems.
