Genus of about 250 species of evergreen shrubs or small trees, native to eastern Asia. They feature glossy leaves and often fragrant flowers for which they are grown.

For practical reasonss and according to their bloom form, they are divided into 6 groupings:
1) Single flowers
2) Semi-double flowers
3) Anemone-shaped flowers
4) Peony-shaped flowers
5) Rose-form double
6) Double flowers
Plant camellias in acid, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils, in deep or partial shade. Compost regularly with leaf mold.
Propagated with difficulty in late spring, by cuttings that require mist propagation with bottom heat to germinate.
Prune lightly by trimming and removing overmature flowers.
Semi-double, red flowers in spring.
