Genus containing only the species Hakonechloa macra, a perennial, rhizomatous, graminaceous plant, native to Japan. It features elongated, linear leaves that grow from the ground and curve gracefully downwards.

It requires moist, well-drained, humus-rich soils and partial shade.
Grown for their shape and their ornamental foliage. Plant in flowerpots, rock gardens and in mixed arrangements.
Suitable for bordering turfs with a view to creating contrast.
Easily propagated by division in spring.
No disease problems.
