The genus of about 110 species of evergreen and semi-evergreen shrubs with green and grayish leaves, cultivated for their five-petaled flowers, borne from late spring to late summer. The name of the genus derives from the Greek words for sun "Helios" and flower "anthos".

They grow in full sun, in rocky, well drained, neutral or alkaline soils.
Plant in rock gardens and flowerpots.
Propagated by semi-woody cuttings in summer and by seeds that germinate at 22°C (72°F).
No disease problems.
Variety with fuchsia-coloured flowers.
