Genus of three bulbous species with green leaves. Its botanical name derives from the mythical hero Hyacinth or Hyacinthus (in Greek, Ὑάκινθος — Hyakinthos), son of Clio and Pierus, King of Macedonia. Grown for their fragrant flowers, associated with rebirth, and borne in late winter and early spring. Remove bulbs during dormancy and store them in a cool, dark place. Replant in early winter at a depth of 10 cm (4 inches).
Grow in light, moderately moist, well-drained soils, in full sun or part shade.
Plant in flower gardens and flowerpots.
Propagated by bulblet division in autumn.
Not subject to diseases.
