Evergreen, graminaceous plants with an upright growth habit and thick culms, known as bamboos. Upright, conical inflorescences appear in summer.

Require moist, drained, humus-rich soils and full sun or part shade.
Used in hedging.
Cut old culms to the ground in late winter.
Easily propagated by division in spring.
Green and black (hence the name), canes.
